A Seasonal Health Concern Highlighted by Expert Insights

Dr. Bilgehan Sezgin Asena, Chief Medical Officer of Kaşkaloğlu Eye Hospital, has shed light on the rising issues of eye dryness and allergies triggered by changing weather patterns. Asena emphasized that cold winds and fluctuating temperatures, especially in winter, can disrupt the body’s hormonal balance, leading to eye discomfort and dryness.

The Effects of Weather on Eye Health

According to Dr. Asena, cold and windy weather can exacerbate symptoms of eye dryness such as stinging, burning, fatigue, and sudden watering. "For patients experiencing these symptoms, we implement replacement therapies including artificial tears, tear production-enhancing eye drops, and even tear duct plugs," she explained.

While weather conditions play a significant role, Dr. Asena reminded that eye dryness can result from various other factors. These include prolonged computer use in office environments, systemic conditions like rheumatic diseases, thyroid-related medications, and acne treatments frequently used by younger individuals.

Seasonal Allergies and Eye Health

Seasonal changes in spring and autumn bring additional concerns, with allergic conjunctivitis being a frequent issue. Dr. Asena attributed this condition to triggers like pollen, sunlight, house dust, and pet dander. “For such cases, we rely on antihistamine and cortisone-based eye drop treatments,” she stated.

To mitigate the effects of allergies, Dr. Asena recommended simple preventive measures such as washing eyes with water and cleaning hands thoroughly with soapy water. “Avoid rubbing or scratching your eyes,” she advised, noting that these habits can harm overall eye health.
