Concerning trend comes as many of the worst-affected countries around the world begin to ease lockdown measures
A record number of new coronavirus cases were recorded globally on Tuesday, amid concerns of a second wave of outbreaks in several countries around the world.
Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University revealed more than 139,000 new Covid-19 cases on 16 June, with the majority of new cases coming from Brazil, the US, India and Russia.
The figure is more than 1,000 cases greater than the previous high, which was recorded on 11 June.
Separate figures compiled by OurWorldinData, a research publication based at the University of Oxford, showed that the seven-day average for new daily cases has risen every day since 14 May.
This trend comes as many of the worst-affected countries around the world begin to ease lockdown measures aimed at containing the deadly virus.
The total number of confirmed cases around the world passed 8 million this week, with global deaths estimated by Johns Hopkins University to be 444,249.
The US is by far the worst-affected country, with more than 2 million confirmed cases and close to 120,000 deaths.
The number of new daily cases in the US continues to climb by more than 20,000 each day.
Only Brazil has a higher number of new daily cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, recording 34,918 new cases on 16 June.
While the number of new cases in the US has levelled off in recent weeks, the number of new infections continues to climb in Brazil.
Other badly hit countries that experienced a significant drop in new cases in April and May are now beginning to see a second wave of new infections.
Having dropped from a peak of 3,000 daily cases to 1,000 daily cases in April, Iran's confirmed cases subsequently rose back to its previous levels in early June.
Fears of a fresh outbreak in China have also resulted in a lockdown of Beijing this week, resulting in the closure of bars and restaurants.
